A previous law enforcement officer has been given an eight-month suspended prison sentence for abusing his previous partner.


Kyle Millar, 28, whose address was offered as c/o Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) head office, Knock, Belfast, last month admitted one charge of domestic abuse between February 2022 and March 2023.


Millar, who had been suspended on complete pay before being sacked last month, remained in a relationship with his victim for one year and seven months when the abuse occurred.


Sentencing at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Friday, District Judge Oonagh Mullan said his offending had had a huge influence on the woman.


Gambling dependency


At a previous hearing in January, the court was told Millar had subjected the lady to "mental torture" by calling her names and buffooning her appearance.


Millar was said to have had a gambling addiction and the victim had actually given him between ₤ 5,000 and ₤ 6,000.


Millar continuously verbally abused his victim, the court was informed, regularly insulted her and threatened to disclose private photographs of her.

'Struggling to progress'


On Friday, Judge Mullan stated "this was an exceptionally regrettable set of circumstances both for the victim and the offender to discover themselves in such a circumstance".


The judge stated the lady was still struggling to move forward and was also still getting treatment since of the psychological health difficulties arising from his offending.


She informed Millar: "It was an extremely regrettable event which has influenced on both of you. The injured party was subjected to treatment by you which she need to not have undergone.


"Because of that you are now in an unfortunate situation because you are no longer in employment."


Millar was offered 8 months in jail suspended for 3 years.


Speaking after Millar's sentencing, the PSNI said he had actually been a serving officer at the time of his angering and had been dismissed after a "swift internal examination" its professional requirements department.


"Anyone who devotes domestic abuse criminal offenses of any nature in our community, no matter who they are or what role they play in society, they will be examined completely and brought before the courts," Det Ch Insp Claire Gilbert said.


"As a police service, we expect the greatest standards of professionalism and integrity from all of our authorities officers, both on and off duty, in accordance with the standards consisted of in the Police Service of Northern Ireland's code of principles."


Gilbert said the PNSI had "shown again today, that there is no space in our police service for people who commit any misbehavior".
